Chronology of cameras Ross
The Ross Focal Plane Reflex was made by Kershaw in their Leeds factory. This particular size (2 ½ x 3 ½ “) was different from the remaining sizes. It was introduced in 1908 and only made for a period of 2 years. It is made of ebonised mahogany covered with Morocco leather, and the fittings in black enamel. It has a particular hood, with no cover and held by 2 wire frames, and folds laterally. It has a magnifying loupe at the top. The ground glass screen is full size. The front has horizontal and vertical movements. The Kershaw non self-capping focal plane shutter delivers speeds in the range 1/20 to 1/800 plus T. The fitted lens is a Zeiss-Ross Tessar with a focal length of 112 mm and maximum aperture of 4.5.
This version was substituted in 1910 by a new version similar to the larger formats, with the conventional viewing hood and shutter controls. Ross called both models the same: Focal Plane Reflex Camera, as also for the other format reflex cameras. But this format had a different construction.
This small camera and the other different formats were all made by Kershaw and were sold by Ross, Marion & Co., Beck and many other British makers under different names. Marion & Co. sold it as the Dainty Soho Reflex No. 1 and the 1910 model No. 2.
